How we Got Here
In 1821 the first missionaries established “Harmony Mission”, a mission to the Osage Indians. The mission was located in Bates County near Rich Hill. These missionaries preached in Independence where they bought some of their supplies.

The church was not formally organized until 1826. In 1839 the first Sunday School west of St. Louis was organized. The present building was erected in 1888. In the 1970’s the building was restored. First Presbyterian Church is the only church included in the Harry S. Truman Historical District. The church is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is site No. 19 in the American Presbyterian/Reformed Historic Sites Registry.
