Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. The Peace & Global Witness Offering (formerly the Peacemaking Offering) supports the PC(USA)’s efforts to engage in peacemaking at all levels of the church’s life and enables the church to promote the peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice and allows us to strengthen peace-building efforts around the world and locally by bringing witness through Christ. The ushers will provide envelopes for this collection on World Communion Sunday, October 1, 2017.

Annual Rummage Sale: Gently used items in good condition may be brought to Westminster Hall on the following dates and times: Preferred times are today and next Sunday and Monday, October 2, from 9:00 A.M.-1:30 P.M. and next Saturday, September 30 from 9 A.M. – 12 P.M.  By appointment Monday-Friday from 8:30-11:30 AM. or 12:30-3:30 P.M. (816-252-6662, fpcindep@swbell.net). Items will be stored in Westminster Hall. Other delivery times may be arranged by calling Emily Johnson at 816-254-5346.  Set-up is October 1 – 3 with the sale from October 4 – October 7.

The early bird registration deadline for Heartland Presbytery’s next mission trip to Guatemala is September 30, 2017. This trip is planned for January 18 – January 25, 2018. The focus of the trip would be relationship-building with our Christian brothers and sisters in the Maya Quiche’ Presbytery. Cost is $1,650 and is all-inclusive of air and ground travel, meals and lodging. The final deadline is October 20, 2017, the cost will be $1,750. Drumm Farm is in need of volunteers to help staff the annual kindergartner visit from Independence School District.  They would like each volunteer to commit to at least 2 outings.  The dates for their events are: Monday, Oct. 9 through Thursday, Oct. 12; and the following week from Tuesday, Oct. 17 through Friday, Oct. 20.  Our partner school, Procter Elementary, will be sending their students on Wednesday, Oct. 18.  Each day commitment is from 9 AM to 12 noon.  Please contact Janet Gibbs at janet.gibbs@drummfarm.org as soon as possible for further information, since the deadline for background checks is next week.

Now through to October 8, you can sign up in the Parlour for Dinners for Six (or seven or eight) or call the church office. Then, all those who have signed up will be randomly placed in groups of six, seven or eight.  A host will be chosen from those who volunteer to host and they will contact the rest of the group to plan a date to get together.   You can meet in someone’s home or eat in a restaurant chosen by the host.

Photography dates for a New Church Directory will be Oct. 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14 (skipping Wednesday for LOGOS).  Members and friends of First Presbyterian Church may sign up online by going to www.fpcindep.org or by using the signup sheets available on the credenza, in the Parlour. Online sign-ups are preferred.  We look forward to seeing your smiling face; it won’t be complete without you!

The Mission Committee is collecting items to fill flood buckets to send to Festival of Sharing in October.  This will help people in the United States as they start their clean-up from these devastating floods.  We will need these items by October 15th.  The list of items needed is in the Parlour.

Operation Christmas Child:  Please consider providing a box for our Operation Christmas Child mission project. There are instructions in the Parlour along with empty boxes.  Feel free to take one of the pre-wrapped boxes to fill with treats for a child that may not otherwise receive a Christmas present. Christian Education and Missions Committees sponsors this project. National Collection week begins November 13.
